How could we not? An eager audience flows into a darkened basement to hear secret stories. The out-of-time setting conjures up a future where storytelling has been outlawed and enigmatic speakeasies have emerged in the shadows of the city. Annexe's editor Nick also did an interview with Liar Katy here.
You offer your work in advance, and if you are selected for one of the sought-after slots - at least three City Lit creative writing students were in - a professional actor reads your work. It was very clear at the rehearsal that you all put a lot of energy and passion into Liars' League and to have the chance to be a part of that is really, really appreciated.
Liar! (short story)
Liars' League has been super from first contact I don't say "from first to last," because I don't want this to be the last. I couldn't be more pleased or impressed. Don't ever underestimate the appeal of the service you provide. I particularly enjoyed the spaces between the words.

And the words of course, but I loved the spaces. I learnt to talk in comedy clubs and there as I'm sure you know, spaces are very risky and rare. To have spaces in which the words can grow is a luxury. I'm won over, as this was a great listening experience, and each actor had me hooked from the start. I've never really experienced story telling before, and I'm definitely hooked.
The quality of the writing and the actors' performances themselves were nothing short of fantastic. They had you laughing, gasping, sighing and shuddering through the whole evening. Needless to say, we will definitely be back. What is the Liars' League? What's with the name? This book will get you under the skin of a cheeky Latino adventurer that brings out the life in London. Then the endings, always without a resolution, become monotonous. Although well written, these stories are generally unsatisfying because of the structure. Copy cat writers have made the Tobias Wolf story a mainstream in contemporary fiction, with indifferent results. Tobias Wolff's latest collection of short stories, written over a period of thirty years, contains twenty-one previously published in book form with ten new stories added. The characters and situations are diverse although a good many stories take place in the snow; as one character says, however-- and I tend to agree with him-- snow is much overrated.
I also agree with the writer Edward P. Jones whose definition of a good short story is one that "the world, for even one character, has shifted, whether to a large or a tiny degree. In some of them the shift is enormous: In others the world moves inside the head of the character. In "Awaiting Orders" a sergeant realizes that he is ashamed to take a woman and her child home with him, not because he has a male lover, but because she will see that he doesn't care for the lover as much as the lover cares for him.
That things between them were unequal, and himself unloving. Wolff writes about relationships, the "shakiness" of families, young love, betrayal, characters who are down and out although they seldom whine-- in a word often decent people. One of my favorite stories is "The Night in Question," a beautiful moving account of a brother and sister who had an abusive father.
The siblings are worlds apart because the brother has gone off the deep end with religion but still so close because of their love for each other. It bears reading again and again. Wolff's seamless transparent prose is for the most part free of metaphor although older people have "wintry smiles" and a "wide woman" on a bus has flesh under her arms that "swings like hammocks.
Wolff certainly is a master of the short story himself.
