I love the wild adventures presented in this book; and the meticulous details about the vegetation and trees of California, which as a native of Illinois, I am not familiar with.
But I am one who appreciates stories like 'Call of the Wild', and grew up loving "My Side of the Mountain", so I liked reading about the meat hunters and the homestead, and the chores that needed to be done.
This genre of book is historical, and you can tell the author appreciates nature and the old ways of those who came before us. I appreciated the Indians and how the main characters were good neighbors with them, and that they all did each other favors - like they did in the old days. I also appreciated the fact that the main character appreciated everyone that worked with him, regardless of where they came from.
Great story, with many twists and turns, and the bad guys were really evil. I loved how sometimes the story was told from the viewpoint of the bear!
