For many decades, the centre of Ploshchad Vosstaniya stood empty until , when this meter grey granite column was unveiled on 8 May on the eve of Victory Day celebrations. Crowned with a bronze star, the column is itself star-shaped in cross-section, the first of its kind in the world. A bronze victory wreath encircles the lower part of the column beneath which oval haut-reliefs engraved with stirring patriotic slogans.

This latest entry in the "Images of War" series resembles other books in the series in that it contains many photographs not previously published. I was surprised how few photos were of the city itself; most were battlefield photos that, to tell the truth, could have been anywhere in the Soviet Union. The narrative deals mostly with the fighting between the German and Soviet armies, not the siege itself.
The captions for the photos are more descriptive than some of the other books in this series. The captions for most of the "Images of War" books are quite repetitive, but that's not the case here.

Another difference compared to the other books in the series is the highly detailed narrative. The author talks a lot about troop movements and strategy. This information is great, except it's useless without maps.
There is not a single map in the entire book, so when the author says that the Soviets attacked such-and-such town or the Germans moved reinforcements up to such-and-such defensive line, the reader has no clue where the troops were moving. I can't understand why authors of military history books fail to include maps. The solid photos and narrative are offset by the lack of maps, causing me to lower my rating to three stars.
