There's no cheating and it does lead to a hea. Arc received for review: One Taste is the prequel to Last Chance. But having a prequel for their novel is genius.
I will make this short. Luke and Lara have been friends for a long time but over the last few months things have changed between them. After losing Kate, Luke turned into a manwhore. Lara hated seeing this since she once had a crush on him. But now, she just gives him the cold shoulder and a hard time. But he doesn't want to give up. He wants her and after getting one taste, he wants more but she is done. She thought he could change but she was wrong. Now Luke has to work even harder to prove to her that he can be the man she thought he could be before is it too late?
I am so glad that I don't have to wait to find out what happens next. I will be reading Last Chance right after I finish this up. I have a feeling that I am going to love it. These characters are stubborn, funny, and flirty. So I am so ready for the ride You are looking pretty hot in those shorts. Now let me go. After reading it, there is one more character I would love to see get a book.
Who knows maybe there will be a spin-off in the future. Anyway, back to Luke and Lara's story It's been one year since Lara walked away from Luke. She was now with Grayson, a man that has loved her for years. Luke knows this but he will not give up on them. He could see that she isn't happy with Grayson and knows in his heart that she loves him.
You are here
She just won't give him a chance to explain what happened after their one night together. She just didn't know it. He just wants one last chance to prove to her that he is the man that she has always loved. Lara loves Grayson but she still thinks about that night with Luke. She knows Grayson would never break her heart like Luke did. But that doesn't mean she doesn't love him. She is torn and when she wakes up in a hospital bed without memories of the last five years, she is even more confused. Two men are vying for her love.
She doesn't want to hurt either of them but she has to make a choice between Grayson and Luke. She doesn't know if she will ever get her memory back so she has to rely on her instincts and the way her body responds to the men touch. She doesn't know who to believe so that's all she has left. Who will she gravitate to? Who can she trust with her memories? Who does she want a future with? I loved this story!!
Luke sees this as a way to start over with Lara and Grayson sees it as a way for her to forget about Luke. They all have to fight for what they want. Even if they have to fight dirty. There are definitely some surprises.
There are some heartbreaking moments and heartwarming ones too. I cared for all of the characters but I had my favorite from the start. I fell hard and fast. In the end will it be Lara choose Grayson, the man that she knows won't break her heart or Luke, the man that already has one upon a time? Wanted to hit someone. Wanted to hug someone. Right now, I have no clue. I'm a big, big fan of this author, and I always anticipate her next release, especially from this series, so I was really looking forward to reading this book!

The prequel novella is also included at the beginning of this book and it was extended and had some new scenes added, so I did do a quick re-read of it before reading the full-length book! I also started this book as soon as I received my ARC and it only took me a few sittings to read! I was reading it every chance I had and the plot was amazing and developed at the perfect pace!
I also loved the sexual tension between the two main characters and that there were plenty of seriously hot scenes! I loved that there was a bit of suspense and action too! I also wasn't expecting the plot to go in the direction it did, but I loved the overall direction that it went in and it made it more interesting and different!
The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Lara was the main female character, and Lara went through a lot in this book! My heart completely went out to her because she was faced with a very difficult choice! Lara did the best she could in the situation she was placed in though! I also had a lot of respect for Lara because she went through something horrible and was then placed in a love triangle of sorts! She handled everything perfectly though and she definitely did the right thing!
I also connected with Lara very well, and never lost that connection with her all the way through this book! Luke was the main male character, and he was seriously hot! Yes, I will admit that he did do some things wrong when he tried to get Lara to notice him, but he did make up for it and it was easy to see how deep his feelings were for Lara!

I was hoping it was going to be as the other books in this series are co-written, so I'm really happy that it was!
It helped me connect more with both characters and it allowed for more things to happen in the plot! I also can't wait to read the next book in this series! Last Chance is full of twists and turns that lead to some pretty epic scenes in this story with Lara and Luke. There is a villain in this story and there is, in my opinion, someone who could be considered a villain too. Were we reading the same book? Aug 16, Jeanette rated it really liked it. Oh MY, I almost gave it a 5. This is a review that I could go on and on about for 20 paragraphs, as I held a job quite similar to Kristen's for my last 15 years in the work world. So give this author extra credit for getting the Academe tenure, politico, and schmoozing worlds superbly perfect. And I will NOT go on for 20 paragraphs because the real people and connection relationships and marriage story- all of it- read it yourself. How 50 is now? Quite often in shifting times and within quicksand loyalties, growth does occur.
Or combinations of both. Steve Yarbrough knows long term human connections. And various things about continuity, as well. And I also think he is plugged into the over 60 perception to our own culture and American style to a T. Sep 13, Lonestarlibrarian Keddy Ann Outlaw rated it it was ok. This book about a marriage nearing its possible end felt flat to me. A college administrator, Kristin, and her hulking, anti-social husband, Cal, move to Massachusetts from California.
She as a new job at a rather podunk college. Her husband remodels their house, drinks a lot and plays his stringed instruments alone in the attic. They are very disconnected and it comes as no surprise to us when Kristin is swept up into an affair with a neighbor. A case of plagiarism at the college also figures i This book about a marriage nearing its possible end felt flat to me.
A case of plagiarism at the college also figures in the plot. Meanwhile, Cal manages to make a few friends after playing hero in a convenience store burglary. Can this marriage be saved? I was not sure I cared, but I managed to finish the book. Apr 10, Sajai rated it it was ok.
Dec 20, Linda rated it really liked it Recommended to Linda by: Booktopia Vermont author Kristen and Cal move to Massachusetts after her job is eliminated as an administrator for a college in California. Cal takes care of the hosue and plays music though he does not consider himself a musician. The two slowly develop relationships with people they meet in their new homes. Most of the people in this book seem to have secrets.
When will they spill out? Nov 11, Mike Coleman rated it did not like it. For a novel about an extramarital affair, it sure is dull. Other writers, Richard Russo comes to mind, have a way of celebrating ordinary people by making them interesting and likeable. That wasn't the case with this Yarbrough novel, at least not for me.

I might give other novels by him a try, but this one just didn't work for me. Nov 12, Kari rated it liked it. For so much time spent on character development, it's a shame I couldn't find one to hold on to. A general feeling of life apathetic. Dec 13, Steven Clark rated it liked it. I read this book because a professor I know at my Alma Mater considers Yarbrough one of her examples of great writing.
I found it a thoughtful story about middle-aged marriage, and since I used to live in Boston, I really liked the descriptions of the locale and nodded uh-huh at the train stops, roads, streets. I did find Cal and Kristin engaging, but not too much. There was a coldness to the story.
I felt that I wanted more, and to be honest, I couldn't finish the last eighty page I read this book because a professor I know at my Alma Mater considers Yarbrough one of her examples of great writing. I felt that I wanted more, and to be honest, I couldn't finish the last eighty pages, although I did skip to the final two chapters.
I didn't feel much passion, and Matt was a bit of a cypher for me. I think Updike does the adultery thing better. But Yarbrough has a great power of description and words. He has strong phrases and settings, and very well-constructed sentences. The robbery was a high point and yet it seemed cold, and I thought going into a long discussion of the robber a distraction. I did like Cal and his life, and Yarbrough made him rounded.
Although I'm not into academic politics, he described Kristin's world very well, and I got a feel for the surroundings of Cal and Kristin's world. Yarbrough also does the pauses and hesitations of marriage very well. I wish there had been more passion, more for me to keep turning pages, but this was a well-written work. Something about the structure worked well for me. It felt like the book was made up of slices and I only had a vague sense of the timeline, and I liked that.
Time is told through New England weather and I wonder if readers from places where there are no seasons got stuck trying to figure out how long this story lasted. The plot is one of frustration. Kristen and Cal have relocated from California to Massachusetts. This was one of the things I liked about this book. Kristen never defines or explains her second marriage. They ask for what they need. Kristen seems to like this freedom within her marriage, although there are times when she wonders what it would be like to love something as much as Cal loves music.
It was fascinating to watch them together because they seemed completely separate, and yet others saw their partnership. Perhaps neither one could see it until someone outside showed them. Kristen finds herself frustrated and lonely in her new world. Cal has music and is remodeling and fixing their new house. A flooded basement leads her to a new friendship with a younger neighbor. Matt is also alone, even among his friends. His choices led to losing his job, marriage and kids, and so he keeps to himself and is on pause. Their friendship brings comfort and then an affair.
What I liked the most about this book is that we never get the full story of Cal and Kristen. There is a huge reveal about Cal that was fascinating. We see his depression and action. He seems completely still and I wondered how much of his life he had lived letting things happen to him. Yarbrough laid out a clear path for his characters and then took his time following it. There are a few flashbacks and side steps, but it moves forward and the ending makes sense.

But this is the first novel of his I've read, and while part of my initial attraction was that a couple moves to the North of Boston area where I'm from so the wife can take an administrative job at state college love campus settings , ultimately it's the writing that made the book stellar. The job market at four-year i Very absorbing read, well written, and insightful.
The job market at four-year institutions is thready. When Kristen lost her job at a well respected California university, she was fifty. Faculty members are not known for their warm welcomes to changes in administration, even though the previous administrators were not necessarily beloved. Kristen was pretty much on her own with her inherited, strong-willed secretary. Someone has an affair, someone foils a convenience store robbery.
Accusations of plagiarism arise, a lost soul neighbor, Matt, who despite his intellect, does penance working in a sandwich shop while he broods over his errant wife--betrayals of all sorts abound. That is a truth most of the characters share. All of the above takes place over the course of the fall semester.
