I can identify with so much here: And Resting Sad Face! At age 50, it is a startlingly gratifying thing to realize that others have had that, too. I truly thought this was something that was simply wrong with me. For decades now, my mother has smiled at me in the company of others, reminding me to smile to look more approachable It takes courage to care for one's self according to one's deepest needs and withstand the scrutiny of others.

I have learned over years that to live as I need and want to means living within a very rich solitude and "visiting the world of people" and I have learned to smile but ignore those who want me paired off or socializing more often.

The Secret To Living Is Giving

One thing I am still embracing: It is not selfish to take exquisite care of my sensitivity and introversion by deciding how and when to participate in the world when others seem to be able to handle the stimulation of "normal life" with ease. A HUGE thank you to the author for this book which will surely be a classic in no time. I know you will help so many of us! Please keep writing and sharing your insights. On the whole, this is a decent guide for introverts who have found their temperament to be a problem for them.

It's written in a peppy, accessible tone with lots of short sentences. It's oriented mainly toward people who are just getting settled in life, and it doesn't have much to offer for more mature people. For example, there's barely a mention of parenting, and there's next to nothing about interpersonal interactions besides dating, love and the office.

I don't think it's meant for introverts who are already well-adjusted and who simply want to understand themselves better. Some sections have a needlessly negative tone, such as in "Introversion doesn't have to doom you" and "Being a single introvert looking for love is hard. As a mental health therapist I really enjoy how Granneman is able to discuss the differences in the brain between introverts and extroverts in a highly accessible way. I've already recommended her book to several of my clients.

An enjoyable, enlightening and affirming read!

I asked for and received an advanced reader copy of The Secret Life of Introverts in exchange for my unbiased review. The world is so programmed to favor extroversion that introversion is often mistakenly perceived as an obstacle to overcome, a problem to solve, or a disorder to cure. This book shatters those misconceptions and exposes the beauty that is the introvert's world of meaningful and quiet interaction. Granneman's relatable storytelling transports the reader through time, space, temperament, and personality so that even an extrovert can glimpse the hidden world of introverts.
