Nice Guy to Mr. And things were always worse at night. He was energized and I was physically exhausted," says Robert Matsuda, a Los Angeles musician who worked full-time and cared for his father with Alzheimer's Disease for three years before recently placing him in a nursing home. As a patient moves from mild to moderate dementia, some home modifications that may include removal of throw rugs, installation of locks and safety latches, and the addition of a commode in the bedroom often need to be made.

This is also the time when the palliative care team should be brought in to support the caregiver and help manage behaviors.

In severe dementia , there may be extensive memory loss , limited or no mobility, difficulty swallowing, and bowel and bladder control issues. There may be a need for around-the-clock care. At this stage, the patient may have difficulty recognizing family members and caregivers. Caregivers experiencing high stress levels during the moderate and severe stages may also be dealing with anticipatory grief associated with a feeling of impending loss of their loved one. Talking with the palliative care team's social worker can help caregivers understand these feelings and develop strategies for dealing with them.

Product details

As a primary career for my mother, who has Alzheimer's, I found this book most informative. It shared information to educate me in the disease and other forms of dementia. It gave valuable facts about medications, facts on what to expect in the future and how to find support and respite. It did this without scaring me to death too, which I'm thankful for, because this road is already stressful enough. Declan Tan rated it really liked it Apr 16, For those who think this fight is for others and there is nothing you can do to combat the effects of cognitive conditions, The Lewy Body Soldier will leave you uplifted, inspired, and ready to play your part in crafting a better, brighter new day.

I know he is loved by all the people that have had the pleasure to meet him on this journey with a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia. I could not put your book down.

It was inspirational, honest, very informative and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing your experiences, wonderful poems and pictures. I strongly recommend this as a great read and as you say Norm one day we will find a cure for this awful disease! Sandy Spencer Whelan shared a post. He shares his story of living with Lewy Body dementia. It is refreshing, after 36 years in care, to see someone who writes with such passion about promoting awareness of this awful disease from a personal insight and not a medical one………. Hi Norm, Have just finished reading your book and found it very inspiring, easy to read and understand and written from the heart, it was like you were having a face to face conversation with me!

I think i have felt every emotion going! Your poems are sad, happy, scarey but most of all a sincere insight into your dementia fight. I highly recommend everyone to read it. You are a true inspiration,. I have recommended your book to a few people that I know are linked to this disease in some way and I know they too will benefit from it. The book is inspirational. I happen to know one editor sat in tears watching the footage. You and Elaine make an incredible impact on so many peoples lives as well as supporting each other and having found each other. That in its self is a rare blessing.
