The Dark Night of The Soul ~ When The Cleansing Begins

Recent interest in Near Death Experiences has brought my mind around to concern about philosophical and spiritual issues, particularly the science community's obstinate clinging to materialist reductionism.

I keep thinking that the scientific approach and its method of opening up new areas of knowledge does NOT have to include the notion that the only realm in which reality can be sought, explored and tested, is that of the material. The beauty of the NDE is that it seems to bring human experience within what could very well be the spiritual realm close enough to the material realm to be tested. Out of Body experiences, for example, often part of the NDE, can actually be verified by comparing what was reported at the time with what the person reported they "saw" during that same time period during their OBE.

I have not actually digressed here in talking about Near Death Experiences--it comes up because it has been by that door that I have entered into exploring more traditional philosophical, religious and scientific thinking. In Angela Tilby, I find a person also interested in investigating how the fields of science and religion have been affecting each other.

She is an Anglican cleric? As I said, I have only been dabbling within this book for a while, but it's been so enjoyable that I recommend it to others who are interested in the meeting of science and religion--others who are maybe concerned with the scientific community's holding back the study of the spiritual in a scientific way--these studies generally needing large samples of a certain population and money to pay them, at times, and the large number of clinicians to administer and contemplate the results of such studies.

Much of the time, this is government money--which is much more often available for the study of the material world--from animal behavior that relates to human behavior, to the effects of drawing coal, oil and gas e. The spiritual, in reality being an extremely important element in human society as far as bringing harmony to individuals and groups and ultimately reducing incidents of violence and war, --and also its effects on the psychology of people. When a proposal to fund such studies comes before the eyes of politicians who have to please populations of atheists or very traditionally religious people, these proposals don't make it past the initial stages of getting approval because of the insistence on scorning folks who suggest that "reality" could include the non-material.

So, again, it might be in studying the historical relationship between religion, science, and society that perhaps some ice jams might be broken in order to free up the minds of people who are stuck fast in the mud of materialist reductionism--or perhaps the mud of traditional, rigid, religiosity. So go ahead, scoop this book up for something intellectually stimulating--something a little different!!
