Brooks combines his lifetime love of horses with his love of the Missouri Ozarks to create several, short stories. Brooks vividly describes his many adventures so that the reader almost feels they are part of the story.

Brooks employs his expansive vocabulary to paint a very realistic picture of the stories that he shares. For example, one can sense the mounting horror when Hobo the horse runs away and it becomes apparent he is going to be seriously injured. In the Flying Circus, reluctant chickens and scheming adults are seemingly colluding to keep some small boys busy for a summer afternoon. His love of the Ozarks and life there as well as the company of equines are apparent and shines through in his writing.

The first half of his book is dedicated to his poetry and these many poems reveal even more of his thoughts on all aspects of life.
