Few of us are familiar with the culture Jesus lived in. In our culture, most humor is based on joke telling, verbal ambiguities, and physical comedy. Jewish humor often employed witty hyperbole—clever, startling, over-the-top statements—to get a laugh. Jesus certainly never employed the caustic humor of late-night comedians who ridicule the weak minded or the unfortunate.
But He did make hypocrites in positions of power the brunt of his wit.

There are numerous passages. Once we realize that Christ was not always engaged in pious talk, we have made an enormous step on the road to understanding. In his famous Sermon on the Mount , Jesus exercised his humor when he stated, "Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but pay no attention to the log in your own eye? First take the log out of your own eye. A small child reading the above verses would laugh at the idea of a man with a big wood beam in his eye trying to find something small on another person.
Literally, these verses appear ludicrous and silly, which is exactly the point! He is using a funny, exaggerated analogy to teach humility and that we ought not to pick on the tiny flaws we see in others.
Finding God in Domestic Chaos
Jesus shows us his sense of humor, early in his ministry, soon after he calls Philip. When Philip tells Nathanael that the Messiah has been found he sarcastically replies, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth? And he isn't deceitful" John 1:
