Funkle Fattie by Heather Langone (, Paperback) | eBay

Aug 09, Kimberley rated it really liked it Shelves: As soon as my copy of Funkle Fattie arrived, I abandoned the book that I was half heartedly reading in favour of starting the novel by Heather Langone. It was a good decision. Funkle Fattie is the story of a shy, unpopular and overweight 12 year old boy, Peter Funkle, in Ipswich, Massachusetts in the summer The tale is narrated by one of Funkle's previous tormentors, Tommy, who, now as a fully grown man, and in the 'Funkle Fattie' is the first copy of a good reads giveaway that I have won. The tale is narrated by one of Funkle's previous tormentors, Tommy, who, now as a fully grown man, and in the caring profession of medicine, is looking back ashamedly at the error of his ways.

Although a short and easy book to read, Funkle Fattie covers some dark topics.

I liked the fact that throughout Langone used the first person narration to give Tommy's current viewpoint of the events that occurred many years previously. I enjoyed the large amount of conversation within the story and only struggled with some of the local American dialect occasionally! This tale took me back to my days at school and the author really does describe the cliques that can form within the school yard in a true to life manner.

There was however one scene within the book that I found heart lifting, although somewhat unrealistic! Involving Nate's crowd outside Peter's window. Despite the seriousness of the tale the author has managed to fit in a good amount of humour. Often I found myself laughing out loud at the toilet humour within the story - don't read it whilst eating!

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick read that still manages to cover a mixture of sadness, humour, love and reflection for the soul. I'm eagerly awaiting Langone's next book Jul 07, Aer Bluewilson rated it it was amazing.

This was an excellent read. I couldn't put it down, and I like how the narrator was a one time antagonist.

Funkle Fattie

As the story is told, the narrator Tom, Peter's childhood bully , tells us the past but does not really try to justify his actions, and this brings an honesty to the story that is absent in a lot of books about children these days. It's not PG, but I would suggest it for both adults and pre-teens.

I like the descriptions of the time period, which is the 70's. You feel the decade without an This was an excellent read.
